- Parents were members of M. E. Church & brought up son in nature of the Lord although they were slaves. Was usefull to Church & felt called to preach & entered ministry. Due to being a slave he could not work extensively. Bought himself at 40 yo. Gave more fully to ministry through Md, De, Pa & often in Va without being molested, with some exceptions, where others could not travel without trouble. If he was molested he would not stop. As soon as Delaware Conference was organized, he entered itinterant ranks & preached until almost spent.

Led to conception of a the Delaware Conference. In 1853 he visited mission work in Liberia & held its first Conferenct of the church. Originator of Centenary Biblical Institute in Baltimore.

- He was bound to a family in Odessa, Del when very young. Converted in a white congregation of M. E. Church nears Sassafras, Kent Cty, Md. In 1830. Licensed to preach 12/12/1851. Achieved various positions. When invited & visiting Lewiston circuit near Laurel, Del., he was prevented by the white people who armed themselves & went to house of one Brother Samuel Spencer & captured him. After warning him of what would happen if he returned to preach the gospel, they let him go. He did return & was again assailed by crowd of white boys & was hidden. Taken from hiding place he was carried ten miles away from Laurel, away from friend & was released. Appointments: Port Deposit; Mt. Zion, Dover; Bridgeville; New Castle & others. Was a Conference steward. Was superannuated in 1884. Preached last sermon in 1890.

Mounted auction block in Princess Anne; with aid of sympathizing white friends bid himself in. Had small lot of land, cabin, wife & little children. Wife & children put up for sale & tried to buy them, raised $1200 but 2 children were sold south just as Civil War came. Admitted in old John Wesley (now Bainbridge Street, Philadelphia) in 1864. Served 32 yrs; 11 yrs as superannuate. Appointments: Union Circuit, Md, Milford, De., Milton, De.; John Wesley, Centreville, Md; West Chester, Pa.; Hillsboro, Md; Marydel; Quantico, Md; Horntown, VA; Lewes & Harmoney, Del; Church Creek, Hillsboro, Salem, NJ; Middletown, Del; Snow Hill Circuit. Superannuated 1885.
