Parents were members of M. E. Church & brought up son in nature of the Lord although they were slaves. Was usefull to Church & felt called to preach & entered ministry. Due to being a slave he could not work extensively. Bought himself at 40 yo. Gave more fully to ministry through Md, De, Pa & often in Va without being molested, with some exceptions, where others could not travel without trouble. If he was molested he would not stop. As soon as Delaware Conference was organized, he entered itinterant ranks & preached until almost spent.

Received D.D. degree from Central Tennessee College. Transferred to Delaware Conference. Appointments in Wilmington, Philadelphia, Chester. Was superannuated in 1885 session in Salisbury, Md.

He was bound to a family in Odessa, Del when very young. Converted in a white congregation of M. E. Church nears Sassafras, Kent Cty, Md. In 1830. Licensed to preach 12/12/1851. Achieved various positions. When invited & visiting Lewiston circuit near Laurel, Del., he was prevented by the white people who armed themselves & went to house of one Brother Samuel Spencer & captured him. After warning him of what would happen if he returned to preach the gospel, they let him go. He did return & was again assailed by crowd of white boys & was hidden. Taken from hiding place he was carried ten miles away from Laurel, away from friend & was released. Appointments: Port Deposit; Mt. Zion, Dover; Bridgeville; New Castle & others. Was a Conference steward. Was superannuated in 1884. Preached last sermon in 1890.
