Was usefull to Church & felt called to preach & entered ministry. Due to being a slave he could not work extensively. Bought himself at 40 yo. Gave more fully to ministry through Md, De, Pa & often in Va without being molested, with some exceptions, where others could not travel without trouble. If he was molested he would not stop. As soon as Delaware Conference was organized, he entered itinterant ranks & preached until almost spent.

In Zion Connection did service in the West. Helped with colored membership of the Southern Church. Organized first convention of colored men held after war in Kentucky, arousing wrath of rebels. Probably assigned to Eastern work for his safety. He was assigned various stations & conferences & was a Presiding Elder of a colored district in Missouri Conference. Received D.D. degree from Central Tennessee College. Transferred to Delaware Conference. Appointments in Wilmington, Philadelphia, Chester. Was superannuated in 1885 session in Salisbury, Md.

Church nears Sassafras, Kent Cty, Md. In 1830. Licensed to preach 12/12/1851. Achieved various positions. When invited & visiting Lewiston circuit near Laurel, Del., he was prevented by the white people who armed themselves & went to house of one Brother Samuel Spencer & captured him. After warning him of what would happen if he returned to preach the gospel, they let him go. He did return & was again assailed by crowd of white boys & was hidden. Taken from hiding place he was carried ten miles away from Laurel, away from friend & was released. Appointments: Port Deposit; Mt. Zion, Dover; Bridgeville; New Castle & others. Was a Conference steward. Was superannuated in 1884. Preached last sermon in 1890.

Worked to paid money to purchase self; master died without signing freedom papers & bound again to slavery. Mounted auction block in Princess Anne; with aid of sympathizing white friends bid himself in. Had small lot of land, cabin, wife & little children. Wife & children put up for sale & tried to buy them, raised $1200 but 2 children were sold south just as Civil War came. Admitted in old John Wesley (now Bainbridge Street, Philadelphia) in 1864. Served 32 yrs; 11 yrs as superannuate. Appointments: Union Circuit, Md, Milford, De., Milton, De.; John Wesley, Centreville, Md; West Chester, Pa.; Hillsboro, Md; Marydel; Quantico, Md; Horntown, VA; Lewes & Harmoney, Del; Church Creek, Hillsboro, Salem, NJ; Middletown, Del; Snow Hill Circuit. Superannuated 1885.
