Probate & Other Court Records • 1,195 Records • Uploaded June 17, 2025
This source was abstracted from the records compiled by Barry W. Miles and Moody K. Milles III. Sources for these records include Accomack County Wills, District Court Wills & Deeds, Superior and Circuit Court Wills, Wills & Deeds, Inventories and Orders and others, dating between 1798 to 1860. Microfilm of original records and an earlier Abstract of Administrations by Nora Miller Turman were used for this book. Source abbreviations include &c (“etc.”) that could reference sources like estate inventories, sales, audits and settlements. Records that mention enslaved people and free Blacks were abstracted from the book for this source. The introduction references the Slavery Laws in Virginia that appear in some entries. In 1806 a law that required freed slaves to leave Virginia and go to a free state was passed. Both Maryland & Virginia were slave states so freed slaves had to go as far north as Pennsylvania or New Jersey. Some wills gave slaves the option of being freed or staying with the family or gave them transportation money to leave. The law was not enforced in Accomac unless laws or norms were violated.
