1890 Special Census of Civil War Veterans

Military • 563 Records • Uploaded June 30, 2022

In 1890, the United States conducted a special census of veterans of the American Civil War; the 1890 population census for the United States was destroyed in a fire. This compilation currently includes Black Maryland veterans, but will be updated periodically to incorporate Delaware and Virginia veterans. The records list the location information, name, rank and company, enlistment and departure dates, and additional notes.

Census records are preserved at the National Archives and Records Administration, which makes digitized copies of the censuses available through digitization partners. These partners include FamilySearch and HeritageQuest (accessible with most local library cards directly from website; for example, see Wicomico Public Libraries' database listings).
