Abstract of Record Thomas Smith,12 yo on 1 January next [likely free black, see 1850 census], son of James Smith, late of said county and of indigent circumstances and with consent of mother Julia Smith, apprenticed to Charles Smith until 1 January 1860 when 21 yo. Thomas to serve in all such lawful business as Charles; at expiration of term to receive suit of clothes suitable for Sundays and $10 in money. Julia Smith "signed" with her mark.
