Message Abstract Encloses her school report for Dec. States that the freedmen have failed to pay her salary of $20, per month as per agreement and she must close her school: States that they have procured lumber for school-house to be erected on grant of land and to be about 14 ft square, while they have one hundred children in the neighborhood who should attend school.
Message Body The enclosed report is respectfully submitted with the regret of the teacher that the Freedmen have not paid their subscription of $20.00 per month to carry on the School and the additional fact that no interest has been taken to raise the Funds Therefore this School must of necessity be closed. School teaching in this vicinity will not be supported by the Freedmen as Mr Groce has taught two School in this county for nearly two years with like success. They have procured timber for a School house to be raised on granted land to be about Fourteen feet square while there is a population sufficiently large to educate at least one Hundred Scholars The amount due me from the school to the close of the month is $24.00 per their agreement made with John H. Butler of which fact you will please acquaint him. Any other information you may require please write to me as C. S. Groce [...] I am a Massachusetts teacher and not a native of this section
