Message Abstract States that from conversation he had with the Supt. of Education he was induced to promise the colored people of Federalsburg that if they would purchase land for school purposes the Bureau would furnish lumber for school-house: that they have purchased two acres, which is deeded to school trustees, and are much disapointed in not receiving the lumber &c.

Message Body Last November, with a conversation I had with the Rev'd. J. Kimble, and with the Board who has control of the Colored School I now held in Baltimore, I took an Intrest for the Colored people in this our town, and procured Two acres of Land, which was deeded to Trustees for the Education of Colored Children, with the understanding if the land could be had for this purpose, lumber would be furnished for the building of the House.
I have written several times in regard to this lumber, have had no answer. I feel very much dissatisfied that I took any part in this matter, as I am blamed by the colored people for disappointing them. They dispenced with their school through the winter to build their house as several of them were workmen, as they thought the building the house, & carrying on the school was more than they could do at the same time.
This deed which I sent the Revd Kimble if it is not reccorded within six months, they will loose the land, as the law require deeds to be reccorded with the time named. I hope something will be done immediately to relieve me from my embarassed situation. Will you let me know something in regard to it.

Message Abstract Acknowledges receipt of letter offering to send the colored people a teacher. States that the people are making efforts to build their school-house, and think they cannot undertake to start a school until it is completed which will be in November.

Message Body Yours of the 7th is at hand, and contents noted.
I called the +[[insert]] (Colored) [[/insert]] people together as soon as I Received yours, And Explained to them +[[insert]] you [[/insert]] would Send them a Teacher for three Months, provided they would pay his Board.
They are now Ready to Commence Building their school House. The Contractor will have the House Ready for them to have a school in by the Fall, or by November, he Demands one half of the money when the house is compleated, and the other half on the first day of January 1870, by our Seeing the money paid, under these circumstances they think they will not undertake to Start a school untill the new House is Ready.
We thought it best to get a good workman to Build the House. He Employs all the Colored men who can do carpenters work.
I am in the Customs House in Baltimore, But had a leave of absence, was here when your Letter came and Laid the matter before them. I made arraingements for them in regard to the building the house before I left for the Custome House.
The most of them are poor, part of the money for their money for the land is not yet paid.
That and the building of the House will be all they can do for the present.
They desire their thanks to you for your offer, for a Teacher, and wish it was in their power to accept it.

Message Abstract Inquires in behalf of the colored people of Federalsburg, Md. if the school house which they are about to erect through the aid of the Bureau, can be built on the church lot instead of the lot purchased for the purpose, on condition that the church trustees deed a portion of the lot (which contains one fourth of an acre), for the school.

Message Body I am just from home, some of the Colored people of Federalsburg, Maryland waited on me while at home to see if the School House to be built in Federalsburg for them could be built on the lot of their. M.E. Church, if the Trustees of the Church would sign a deed for the School House to be built on the same lot, the Church lot contains one quarter of an acre of land, I told them this lot of ground being so small, in case of fire both the schurch and School House would burn down. I thought it not advisable to build the School House there but on the ground where they have purchased and been accepted by your Department. I had no right to make any change but would Refer to you. Please answer at your earliest convenience as they are now ready to commence the work, as soon as a decision is made and sent them. Which place to build the School House on.
