Abstract 10/9/1823 codicil of will: all those remaining in slavery at time of testatrix's decease & have arrived at the age of 31 on the 1st day of January following testatrix's decease and capable of obtaining their living, and being under the age of 45 shall be free - and should any of the women athe time "have an infant child at the breast or too young to be separated from the mother" the infant is also to be deemed free. remainder of Negroes under the age 31 are to be freed on the 1st of January of the year that they attain such age, and those still remmaining inslavery are to be sold for their respective terms and the moneys from their sale to be applied to thepayment of debts. testatrix desires that as many of the slaves as possible be sold to those peole residing in the state of Pennsylvania in which case they shall have their freedom at the age of 28. Executors are implored not to let those slaves remaining "to be sold as a slave for life" or to hold them beyond the age of 31 unless in case of infirmity or that they may be incapable of supporting themselves -" it having been long my first principle that all my slaves should as would circumstances permit become free people."
