Abstract Jospeh L. Brown, City and County of Philadelphia, Penna. To James R. Lofland of Milford, Delaware - whereas on 31 Jan 1852 I signed and executed a deed of gift to my 2 children, Jacob B Brown and Sally B. Brown (since Sally B. Lofland intermarried with James R. Lofland) and by terms of said deed gave to my two children all my slaves in the State of Maryland, and since, my son Jacob B. Brown hath departed this life intestate and without issue and whereas according to laws of MD. the interest in slaves has ret'd to me, in cons. of $2425 paid by James R. Lofland, all the slaves in following schedule, valued at: Mary, $100; Thomas, $400; Charles $1000; Asbury, $500; Joseph, $350; Edwin, $250; Erasmus $150; Wilhemina $550; Joanna $550; a child of Wilhemina, name unknown, $100; a child of Joanna, name unknown, $100; Alice, $400; Effelinda, $400; total value $4850 - one-half to Lofland; one-half in right of his wife.
